Because animals have a consciousness which makes them different from plants and because the Hebrew word nephesh in the Old Testament is used sometimes in reference to this characteristic of animals some people would say that animals have souls. Though they do not have eternal souls they are part of Gods creation and they give Him His due worship. God marks the dropping of every sparrow. Since animals and plants are living things they have souls but not in the sense in which human beings have souls.
